Previous experience, experimentation and export survival: Evidence from firm?product?destination level data

This paper explores the role of a firm's product and/or market export experience and experimentation for survival new product-destination spells, using firm-level Spanish customs data over period 1997–2015. Previous research has documented positive impact on survival. contributes to extant literature by unravelling distinct effect ongoing accumulated (i.e., from start spell), previous destination-market (repetition relationships). We find that 60% product-country spells end during their first year. Thereafter, hazard rate remarkably falls with elapsed duration age). Exporting endures higher risk than entering market. Besides, (repeated combinations) (especially at rather destination level) significantly lower exit hazard. The results are consistent studies suggest sunk costs enter markets relatively high, while learning more relevant level.
